The materials used in Shade are soft and light cedar wood and Washi, which is pasted onto the wooden frame. This combination allows for the creation of captivating shadows and the option to experiment with different types of Washi. The result is a shelf that can be customized to suit various aesthetics and moods.
What sets Shade apart is the unique texture and appearance achieved through the use of Washi. This traditional Japanese paper adds an atmosphere that cannot be replicated with other materials. The interplay between light and shadow creates a sense of depth and intrigue, enhancing the overall ambiance of any space.
The realization of Shade involves meticulous craftsmanship. The wooden frame and side panels are made of vertical grain cedar wood, while the top panel is made of knotty grain cedar wood. The joints are secured using wooden dowels, ensuring both stability and visual appeal.
Recovering the Washi on Shade is a straightforward process. The wooden frame is removed from the shelf and placed into a special mold. Glue is applied to the frame, and the Washi, cut to the appropriate size, is carefully pasted onto it. After spraying water and allowing it to dry, the frame is removed from the mold, resulting in a beautifully finished piece.
The Shade project began in April 2019 and was completed in December 2021 in Japan. Throughout the design process, the team focused on the value of using cedar wood, which is abundant in Japan, and the incorporation of the traditional Shoji concept into modern furniture.
Overcoming challenges such as distortion caused by the expansion and contraction of the wooden frame during the Washi replacement process, Hiramatsu and his team developed a special mold to ensure a seamless application. They also experimented with various types of Washi, expanding the possibilities for customization and personalization.
Shade has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
With Shade, Yuto Hiramatsu has successfully merged Japanese tradition with contemporary design, creating a partition shelf that is not only functional but also a work of art. Its delicate beauty and versatility make it a captivating addition to any space, bringing a touch of Japanese elegance to the modern lifestyle.
